Unimelb Cafe Go-To's!

I consider myself an avid coffee enthusiast, as I’ve been on quite the coffee journey since first year. Initially a devoted mocha lover (which I still proudly am), my palate has gradually expanded to include long blacks, cappuccinos, and even matcha!

Throughout my three years at university, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring various cafés around campus. In this post, I’ll share some of my favourite spots, as well as a few cafés that are next on my list to visit!

Starting strong with the mocha. I recently stumbled upon The Standing Room in MSD, and I’ve enjoyed some of my favourite coffees there. What I truly appreciate is their consistency – every time I order a mocha, it’s always made well. The hot mocha is rich and indulgent, though I personally prefer their iced version over the hot one. That said, I would argue The Standing Room excels in its coffee offerings overall. However, I did find their iced matcha to be a bit too watery and with a stronger, more bitter matcha flavour than I prefer. If you tend to enjoy a sweeter matcha, you might want to explore other spots.

Another fantastic café for both hot and cold coffee is Seven Seeds. This popular spot, especially known among Commerce students, is conveniently located within walking distance of The Spot. Beyond its excellent coffee, the café offers a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, perfect for studying or unwinding. As soon as you step inside, you’re welcomed into a spacious, light-filled environment with the gentle hum of music and distant chatter, creating a cozy, almost homey feel that makes it hard to leave. I still remember my first visit in my first year, where I immediately fell in love with their mocha. The richness and depth of their coffee never disappoints, and whether you’re a latte aficionado or a mocha enthusiast, this café has something for everyone. Even after all this time, their quality remains outstanding.

The grass is always greener on the other side and speaking of let’s talk matcha.

Books n Bites was my recent discovery that’s been turned into my latest obsession. Definitely my current favourite matcha place. Their matcha is smooth and creamy, laced with rich earthy flavours yet balanced by just the right amount of sweetness. The result? A beautiful blend of earthy richness with a subtle matcha bitterness that makes it irresistible. If you’re someone who prefers a sweeter matcha, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Next on my list is Good Measure. Located about a 15-minute walk from Stop 1, I’ve heard nothing but great things about their coffees and matcha. I’ve walked by it several times, and it’s always bustling with customers, which is a good sign!

Hopefully if you’re on the lookout for a new café to try, you’ve got some reliable recommendations that won’t disappoint. Happy coffee and matcha drinking everyone!
