It's the thing everyone’s talking about as we enter our final years of uni. Meeting the right people, at the right time, in the right places and, of course, knowing what to say to leave the right impression.
I know I’m not the only one who once felt overwhelmed by the phrase "It’s not what you know, but who you know."
Between completing your degree, working part-time, and trying to secure a graduate role, the pressure can feel like a lot. But here’s what I’ve learned so far and maybe it’ll help you too.
Rethinking Networking
I used to think networking was inauthentic and transactional. But I’ve come to realise it’s not about how many LinkedIn connections you have or how many networking events you attend. It’s about the genuine connections that truly stick.
Over the past year, I’ve learned that real networking success comes from showing up as your authentic self. Authenticity is memorable.
The Power of Genuine Interest & Curiousity
Showing real enthusiasm for your career path is far more valuable than pretending you have it all figured out. Employers and professionals don’t expect us to know everything, but they do appreciate curiosity, engagement, and passion.
Remember: these professionals we are networking with are all human, looking for interesting conversation. When you talk about your genuine interest in a field, it creates real, meaningful discourse.
Making the Most of Online Networking
Luckily, We don’t have to rely solely on in-person events anymore, platforms like LinkedIn make networking more accessible than ever. Cold messaging can feel intimidating, but over time, I’ve developed a formula that helps foster meaningful connections (and increases the chances of getting a response!)
My Go-To Cold Messaging Formula
Passion: Start by sharing your genuine interest in the field. Show that you're not just another student looking for a job, you’re someone who is truly invested in this career path.
Common Ground: Find a point of relatability. Maybe you went to the same university, studied the same degree, or share similar career interests. This helps create a more natural connection.
Due Diligence: Do your research. Look at their profile, read their posts, and understand their work. This shows that you’re not just sending a generic copy-paste message but that you’re genuinely interested in their career and contributions.
Call to Action: Keep it simple. Ask if they’d be open to a quick chat. This shows initiative without making the first conversation feel like a big ask.

Final Thoughts:
Being part of SAMM has given me so many opportunities to network in person, meet incredible professionals, and even land my internship. Putting yourself out there and having authentic conversations does pay off and it can for you too.
